Yard Work
|
At the beginning of the pandemic, as an apartment dweller, I found myself dreaming about having my own yard. I longed for my own outdoor oasis, a place where I could lie down in the grass and watch the clouds go by or sip my morning coffee and read a book, without anyone else crossing the boundaries into my personal space. As I began working on my Yard Work pieces, the act of making them felt like daydreaming my perfect yard into existence through images that I collected and created. I pieced together photos of friends' outdoor spaces, imagining a space to garden and keep bees. I picked up bits of plant life from long walks on communal walking trails, bringing them home and reassembling them into something permanent in the form of cyanotype prints on fabric. Now it is a few years later and I do have a yard of my own. The immediate threat of the pandemic has passed but the appreciation for an outdoor space of my own has remained. In my current work I use those same photo processes to explore the act of slowly cultivating my yard into the space of my dreams.
